Job Description
As a Head of Data Science at Office for Local Government, you’ll:
- Lead, manage and develop a growing team of data specialists.
- Lead on developing Oflog’s Data Science function and work programme, identifying opportunities to use a range of techniques (e.g. web scraping, natural language processing, machine learning) to create novel data and insights about Local Government.
- Identify how insights from data can help to underpin real-world decisions about Oflog and Local Government and credibly present these to senior stakeholders.
- Manage and develop our Data Engineering team to ensure Oflog acquires, uses and manages its data assets securely and efficiently.
- Develop and uphold ethical and quality assurance standards for how Oflog uses data, embedding these principles across Oflog.
- Engage with stakeholders across teams in Oflog, Government and Local Government to promote and establish Oflog’s approach to data and identify opportunities to collaborate.
- Provide thought-leadership on how Oflog can support Local Government to access and use data in better ways.
Requirements

- Strong technical skills and experience in applying a range of data science techniques and tools to create new data, insights and evidence.
- Good dissemination skills to communicate new insights from data with a range of senior stakeholders.
- Knowledge and understanding of data engineering, sufficient to oversee a programme of work to operationalise efficient and secure processes for managing Oflog’s use of data.
- Strong leadership and management skills, to set direction and build capability within a new team.
- Good stakeholder engagement skills to collaborate across a range of policy and analytical teams and with stakeholders in and out of government.
- Knowledge and experience of (or a willingness to learn) how to facilitate complex data sharing between organisations, including of sensitive data.
